Since the beginning of civilization, humans have tried to duplicate what nature has created; sometimes trying to out-do mother-nature in the process. Dental Implants are a shining success story among such human endeavors. In the past, when a tooth was removed due to some dental misfortune, the residual space was left as it is, or was replaced by a bridge or a removable partial denture. As is well known, a bridge usually requires extensive reduction of the neighboring teeth, and a partial denture has always been simply inconvenient. Dental implants are the answer whenever a single tooth is missing or if multiple teeth are missing… a single tooth can be replaced by placing an implant in the jaw bone and attaching a crown to it. If multiple teeth are missing or if the entire arch is devoid of teeth, multiple implants are placed in the jaw and the entire dentition can be reconstructed on these implants.

Dental Implant placements do require some surgery. A small opening is made in your jaw-bone and the implant is screwed into place. The actual procedure may take only about 10-15 min. This surgery is becoming increasingly simple and often times, does not require “reflection” of the gums. Occasionally, a bone graft or a sinus-lift is carried out prior to the implant placement. After the surgery, there is a healing period of 3-6 months followed by the attachment of a crown to the tooth. The crown placement is a simple and painless procedure.
